Why are we organizing a degrowth conference?
As the social and climate crisis deepens, it is increasingly clear that the design of our economic system is one of the main roots of the current problems. As long as profitability and growth are the main goal and measure all economic activity, fairer and more sustainable forms of meeting our needs will always play the second fiddle.
The aim of the conference is to bring together people from various backgrounds in the field of social-ecological transformation, to deepen awareness of degrowth ideas and discuss together various activities and actors within socio-ecological transformation, broaden the understanding of the degrowth concept, and explore together both visions and existing examples of a more just and sustainable economy and society. An integral part of the conference is to experience “good life” in practice, including enough time to share our ideas and experiences, great food, relaxation, and joint cultural and social events.
The conference program will gradually present visions, proposed policies, existing practices, and possible strategies for promoting degrowth and socio-ecological transformation, all situated mainly in the context of Central and Eastern Europe with its historical experience and current situation. Space will be given to various formats (from panel lectures and debates to experiential workshops), which will enable both intellectual and other experiences.
A more detailed program and invited speakers will be introduced at the Facebook event of the conference here:
If you can attend the conference in person - great! Please fill out the registration form (if you haven't already).
Choose the amount of your voluntary contribution (in the form of a donation) according to your circumstances. We suggest three possible amounts for your contribution: 20 EUR (partial contribution), 40 EUR (standard contribution) and 80 EUR (sponsorship contribution), but you can choose another amount. Please pay the chosen amount here - via the Donation form.
What is the money needed for?
The costs of the conference will be covered mainly by the Erasmus+ project. Unfortunately, this source is not enough to cover all the necessary expenses - we need to find additional resources, especially for the part of the speakers' fees, providing common food and drinks, and interpreting the plenary discussions that will include speakers from abroad and to strengthen the media coverage of the conference, so that it can contribute as much as possible to stirring up the Czech public debate on the need to transform our economic system.
Who is behind the conference?
The conference is co-organized by 4 organizations: the Department of Environmental Studies at Masaryk University, NaZemi, Re-set - platform for social-ecological transformation, and Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie. The conference is organized within the project "Partnership for Dialogue on Degrowth and Socio-Ecological Transformation", supported by the European Union under the Erasmus+ program. At the same time, a great team of volunteers is involved in the preparation of the conference. Thank you!
If you are not coming to the conference - what a pity! Still, you can support us with any amount you choose. We will produce short videos, recordings of plenary discussions and media outputs, all of which we will publish online - so you will be able to access the conference materials virtually.
