Pearl Sylva*
Forest, park, river, borderland
An ornamental forest, a park with a lagoon and sculptures to look at and play with are being created on the waterfront between the Křinice river and Nová Perla.
Between the courtyard, the cobbled path to the Perla and the river lies an area long abandoned and neglected. It is now made up of mature trees that have taken over the ruins of the western buildings of the former factory site with its butterbur covered lagoon. It is bounded to the north by the meander of the Křinice River and the southern end is closed off by the outlet from the mill wheel, where the water from it is returning to the main stream. Above the lagoon, the foundation of a steam turbine can be found among the bushes, above which a now collapsed building resembling a Romanesque chapel towered.
In these places, a forest of ornamental trees is being created with a mudbog pond, where sculptures by selected artists created especially for Perla Sylva find their place. Some of the sculptures will also be utilitarian objects or play sculptures, climbing frames and hideaways. The "Play Cube" by Lenka Klodová is in the place. The second of these will be her "Airplane" in autumn 2023. She and her creative group, Terrible Child, already known for their beautiful playgrounds, will create a large wooden construction of a forest-engulfed machine.
"The object depicts the silhouette of a fallen plane, which has already been swallowed up by nature. I see this object as both documentary and symbolic. On a historical level, it refers to an air disaster that took place in 1972 nearby close to Srbská Kamenice and became an extremely powerful story of survival and rescue. On a symbolic level, the object is a place of adventure, suspense, challenge, but also a message of failure and the ultimate victory of nature over technology", says the author.
But now there are several months of landscaping, removing the debris of demolished buildings and illegal dumps. Come and stay in Perla and help us or support us by donating to our society's transparent account 2800715521/2010 or here at Darujme.
*Sylva or silva is a Latin word that means "forest" and sylvan means "of the forest". In forestry the word silviculture is used, which literally means forest care. Sylvanus was the Roman god of forests and also of fields and balks.
Nová Perla (novaperla.cz/) grew up in the valley of the Křinice River, dividing the Ore and Lusatian Mountains in the tri-border area of the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. Its valley is spreading between natural parks that cover the most dramatic geological and human history of Europe.
Nová Perla has decided to save what is left of Robert Solomon's factory and transform the whole area into an independent and self-sufficient cosmopolitan haven. Our concept of creation is an attempt to continue the "great work" in the uneasy environment of an open community: an intertwining of education, art, consideration and the desire for freedom. We bring together creators of all art forms, authors of literature, theatre and film, as well as representatives of selected scientific disciplines and practical skills.
The Nová Perla is a place of gathering and solitude amidst a beautiful landscape habitat, as well as a safe haven for creators and a free forum for the presentation of ideas and works. The international circle of Divus Publishing and Eastern Alliance society takes care of this.
In the ruins of the iconic Nová Perla structure built around 1910, which resembles a seaside castle with a lighthouse, we have built a gallery, a convalescent room, residential studios, workshops and an editorial office with a print shop. A large glass conservatory will soon be built on the site of the rusty warehouse.
A café with terraces, a bookstore, a library, a graphic studio and two apartments were built in the dilapidated former shop building. The café offers a large range of drinks from small regional producers and food prepared from the perla's garden harvest and products of local growers and farmers. In the library and bookstore you can read and buy books and magazines from Divus and other associated publishers in several languagesand publications about the region and its history.
The overgrown ruins of buildings already demolished and their surroundings are transformed into an ornamental and sculpture park with a children's playground. A small water area with a pier is created from a local swamp formed by the run-off from underground springs. New fruit trees and shrubs are planted and the derelict surroundings are transformed into a vegetable garden.
New Pearl is environmentally friendly, saving sources and hardening itself, recycling most of the used drinking water, and preparing to start generating an alternative source of electricity.
