The cholera outbreak in Zambia began in October 2023 with a surge in cases since January 2024; over 19,000 cases with over 700 deaths. Since cholera is linked to the absorption of contaminated water or food, access to clean drinking water is essential to stem its spread. It is important to highlight that cholera is a preventable disease. Good access to clean water, and proper sanitation infrastructure and hygiene measures (focus on WASH: Water and Sanitation, Hygiene) reduces the likelihood of cholera outbreaks. Awareness and prevention through community networks are as essential as medical care. Disaster Aid Europe z.s is helping & supporting Lukasa Rotary Clubs in their efforts to fight this outbreak, by focusing on the provision of clean drinking water technologies and WASH training & workshops.
